Mystified Couples Presents: Merit and Ethan

Welcome to Mystified Couple of the Month. This month I am honored to introduce the couple:
Merit and Ethan

MERIT

Merit is a dark haired, blue eyed, 28 year old English graduate student at the University of Chicago working on her dissertation when she is bitten. She is an avid fan of the Bears and the Cubs, musicals, and was a former ballet dancer. Her well-known fashion sense consists of T-shirts, jeans and Pumas rather than the fashion couture associated with Cadogan house. From the very beginning of Book 1, she fosters a mutual hatred and attraction/passion toward Ethan Sullivan, her Master. But with each book her attraction towards the desirable Ethan and grows and grows and she is unable to resist him.

“You’re crude.”

I’m crude?”

You just offered to make me your whore.”

To be the Consort of a Master vampire is an honor, Initiate, not an insult.”

It’s an insult to me. I’m not going to be your—anyone’s—sexual outlet. When that . . . happens for me, when I meet him, I want partnership. Love. You don’t trust me enough for the former,

and I’m not even sure you’re capable of the latter.”

ETHAN SULLIVAN

Ethan is the 394 year-old Master of Cadogan House. He has a responsibility as master of Cadogan house to lead his vampires and protect them. Since the moment Merit has walked into his life he has changed tons. He is beginning to feel things that he has not felt for hundreds and hundreds of years. Although Merit does drive him a little crazy sometimes he wants her and makes it known to her. But Merit wants more than lust, she wants love. But he does not stop trying to seduce her and he’s very good at it. By TWICE BITTEN, he has come to terms that he does love Merit and onward tries to convince that what he feels is real.

“Was I not tempting enough?” I asked him. “Not classy enough?”

I didn’t expect him to answer, but he did. And that was almost worse. “There’s nothing wrong with you.”

He’d stood up and slipped his hands into his pockets. I met his gaze and saw the green fire in his eyes. “You’re perfect—beautiful, intelligent, intractable in a kind of . . . attractive way. Headstrong, but a good strategist. An amazing fighter.”

THE COUPLE

I have loved the relationship between Merit and Ethan since the beginning. Through the first two books I was always going crazy about them getting together. The anticipation was killing me. At the start, Merit wants something more than lust, she wants love. And Ethan does not deny his attraction to Merit, but it is more of a physical relation he wants, but soon turns around to the possibility that he wants more than that, he wants her heart.

They have come a long way since the the first book in the series, but both have to give a little bit. Ethan started to have possible regrets but seen past them which hurt Merit and is scared to open herself up to Ethan again. But in time I think she will.

I have way too many favorite Merit and Ethan scenes/moments to count she I’ll probably be listing a lot of them in the comments. I had fallen in love with these two since the minute I picked up the first book and I hope they have a happily ever after.

“He paused, then tapped a finger against the box. “This is a wish,” he said quietly, “that even after four hundred years of existence, a man can be strong enough to accept the gifts he’s given.”

“Ethan—,” I began, but he shook his head.

“I’m prepared to wait for a positive response.”

“That’s going to take a while.”

Ethan lifted a single eyebrow, a grin lifting one corner of his mouth. “Sentinel, I am immortal.”

“You can run. You can keep running to the ends of the earth. But I won’t be far behind you.”

“Ethan—”

“No. I will never be far behind you.” He tipped up my chin so that I could do nothing else but look back into his eyes. “Do the things you need to do. Learn to be a vampire, to be a warrior, to be the soldier you are capable of being. But consider the possibility that I made a mistake I regret—and that I’ll continue to regret that mistake and try to convince you to give me another chance until the earth stops turning.”

  1. Loved this one. Especially the Hard Bitten quote. Makes the ending that much more heart breaking.

@Looksie: I know!okaiexz…so this is a Merit quote and I just loved it so much I had to include it. She is so funny. I love her personality and everything about her:"Well?” “Well, what?” I waved a hand at the room. “Start genuflecting. Let’s see some knee action.” “You’re serious.” I lifted my brows. He responded in kind, but finally nodded his head, then walked between the couches. He dropped to one knee, then held out his hands. “I’m monumentally sorry for the pain and humiliation that I caused you and your—” “Both knees.” “Pardon?” “I’d prefer to see both knees on the ground. I mean, if you’re going to grovel, be the best groveler you can, right?"

  3. Mariya says:

OMG. ETHAN!!!"What’s this?” “An apology, of sorts.” I made a moue, but slipped the lid from the top . . . and then my breath left me. Inside the box sat a baseball, its well-worn white leather marked by the signatures of every Cubs player from the team. It was just like the one I’d had—just like the one I’d told him about the night we made love."

  4. Alexa says:

I haven't read any of these books yet but I have been told time and time again that I need to buy them. Thank you for all the great quotes you have moved this series to the top of my to buy list 🙂
